Congratulations to Jesse Hastings on making the finals and both Thomas Baker and Hunter Pranger placing 7th for the team. The trio lead the Titans to a 17th place team finish out of 45 teams that brought state qualifiers. It's another top 20 finish for the program. MVPCS Wrestling is on the way back up with injured wrestlers returning next year and younger wrestlers stepping up. We look forward to the off season tournaments where our wrestlers will compete at the national level.
Hastings pinned his way to the finals where he met Kizer of Howard for a 3rd time this season and lost by decision. Hastings only losses on the year are all from Kizer. It's exciting to make the finals expecially at a combined State Tournament with a crowd of near 25,000 in attendance at the Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls. Pranger and Baker weight classes if wrestled today would have different results. Most matches between the placewinners at 138 and 160 were close and leads changed often. The talent and depth at those 2 weights in the B's kept several ranked and higher seeded wrestlers off the podium. Pranger and Baker both had 1st round pins followed by tough quarterfinal losses. Pranger was leading Peters of Winner 6-2 nearing the end of the 2nd period before giving up 5 unanswered points and the lead to Peters 7-6 who cotinued to score and win the match by fall. Peters went on to place 3rd and Pranger to the wrestlebacks. The Baker match was 0-0 starting the 2nd period and Baker was riding out Scheidt of Canton until he fell victum to a headlock. Scheidt made the finals and Baker to the wrestlebacks. In the second round wrestlebacks following the quarterfinals both Pranger and Baker had major decisions and secured a place.
The next morning Hastings semi-final pin secured him 2nd place. Pranger who had 3 wins on the year against Nedved of Wagner but gave up a 3-2 lead and takedown with 30 seconds left in the match to loose 4-3 and nocked out of the 3rd or 5th place matches. Baker also had a 5-3 lead with 28 seconds left in the 3rd period against Gessner of McCook Central/Monstrose when Baker was thrown to his back loosing 8-5 and also nocked out of the 3rd and 5th place matches. Nedved went on to place 5th and Gessner 3rd respectively. Both Pranger and Baker went on to end well and with a win each placing 7th.
Everyone needs to watch their matches on trackwrestling.com and evaluate how to stay in better position, improve technique, and avoid mistakes. The sport is mostly mental and having a tough attitude and can turn a match around. We have to work on ups and downs in a match and finish more of our moves (mat awaremess) which will lead to more wins. We have to avoid slumps in the season and welcome the grind. We will figure this out in the offseason and be sure to find tough matches to practice our resolve.

Both the A and B Tournaments were ran in the same facility with 8 mats for the first 3 rounds. Seating was at a preimum on the lower level for reserved ticket holders. For the last rounds the general admission belconies were mostly full. The plan is for the tournament to be combined again and in Rapid City next year and will most likely stay combined for years to come alternating between the PREMIER Center and Rapid City's Civic Center. A and B wrestlers often travel and wrestle on combined off-season events and being able to watch local Chamberlain, Mitchell and Huron Class A teams wrestle makes the SDHSAA Wrestling Tournament worth the price of admission! Please consider attending and resering your ticket early next January 2019!
