Mount Vernon School is excited to welcome AJ Kortemeyer, who is currently teaching 6th and 7th grade Math and Science, as well as 6th grade Social Studies this year. With a deep appreciation for education shaped by great teachers throughout his own schooling, Mr. Kortemeyer is eager to provide that same positive experience for his students.

“An educational experience goes far past the diploma,” he says. “It builds relationships and teaches life skills that can last a lifetime.” That belief guides his classroom philosophy, along with one of his favorite quotes: “Students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

A graduate of Custer High School, Kortemeyer continued his education at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, earning a degree in Elementary Education and later returning to complete a Master’s in Educational Administration.

Outside the classroom, AJ enjoys spending time on the golf course, exploring the Black Hills, or relaxing on the boat. Students might be surprised to learn that he once played football with Mr. Cavanaugh (student teacher in the 4th grade)! His favorite movie, Greater, reflects his love for perseverance and motivation—values he brings to his teaching every day.

This year, Mr. Kortemeyer is most excited about seeing students grow—both academically and personally—as they navigate the school year. And if he could travel anywhere, he’d head straight for the Rocky Mountains, where he finds both peace and inspiration.
