School board election

Hello parents of the Mount Vernon School District.  My name is Robert Mayer.  My family, friends and co-workers call me Rob.  I was born and raised on a farm outside of Armour South Dakota and graduated class of 1994 from AHS.  My wife, Melissa, and I have been married for 22 years.  We have two boys in school at Mount Vernon.  Chris is a sophomore and Riley is a 7th grader.  Both boys are very active in school, and sports, as are we following them to all of their events.

I work for the state of South Dakota with the South Dakota Highway Patrol.  I have been with the patrol for over 23 years and have worked in Flandreau, Sioux Falls, and here in the Mitchell area.  When we are not busy with work and kids, my family loves to camp, fish, hunt and golf.

I am running for a position on the Mount Vernon school board because I believe I have excellent leadership qualities and have a vested interest in the success of our children’s school.  I am a former Army National Guard soldier and currently hold a leadership position with the Highway Patrol and supervise approximately 50 troopers in the southeast third of the state.  I recently completed my bachelor’s degree in Sociology, from SDSU, and have aspirations to put my knowledge and experience to good use working for the parents and kids of the Mount Vernon School District.

The Mount Vernon School District’s greatest strength is its teachers.  For almost 10 years we’ve lived in Mount Vernon, we’ve had nothing but great experiences with all our children’s teachers and coaches.  It is my belief that the teachers in Mount Vernon are what make our school one of the best around.  It’s my goal, if elected, to support the continued tradition of high quality staff for our school.

As with any school, one of the biggest challenges is to maintain a budget that provides the best academic and athletic opportunities for our kids.  As a member of the school board, I want to ensure that money is spent wisely and keeps the children’s best interest in mind.  I also want to ensure that we continue to be successful academically and prepare our kids for their future outside of the Mount Vernon school.

As a member of the community, I’ve seen how all of our lives revolve around our school.  In a very small town, it is critical to keep our enrollment up.  I understand that it is extremely important to continue to advertise our town, and our school, to encourage families to move to Mount Vernon.  I believe that a continued partnership with the city council and the Mount Vernon Economic Development Group will help in this area.  I also believe that it is extremely important to continue to welcome children into our school and to nurture them with the small town values that we all know and love.

Please consider me for a position on the Mount Vernon school board on June 8th.

Thank you.

Rob Mayer
