Mr. Helling

Name: Jason Timothy Helling

Position/School: 5th Grade

I grew up in Mount Vernon, SD.

Family (you can also include pets): My wife Jackie and I currently live in Mount Vernon with our 3 children (Brylie 8, Tatum 6, and Lawson 3) and our dog, Reece.

Education: I have my Bachelor of Science from South Dakota State University where I majored in HPER and minored in Health Education.  In addition to my B.S., I obtained my Secondary Education Teaching degree through Dakota State University.

What makes you MV proud? Last summer we were instructed to choose “one word” for our classrooms that would pique the interest of our students and hopefully foster conversation as to what the word means.  I decided to use the word altruism.  Altruism is when we act to promote someone else's welfare, even at a risk or cost to ourselves.  In other words, putting others first.  This is what makes me “MV proud.”  Our community is very selfless and looks to give a helping hand when needed.  This may be assisting with harvest due to an unexpected crisis, showing support when a loved one becomes ill, or volunteering for one of the numerous projects in town.

What was your first job?

My first “job” out of college was with Anytime Fitness in Yankton, SD.  I spent time working as a Personal Trainer at both the Yankton and Vermillion facilities.

Who is the most inspirational person to you?

One of the most inspirational people in my life would have been my grandfather, Lawrence Helling.  He was a quiet man with a kind heart. Grandpa Lawrence came from a generation where people worked hard and had a strong faith.  He loved to tell stories about his childhood and the encounters he had during his time in service.  The thing I probably remember most is how people looked forward to their encounters with him.  That attribute is one I hope to follow as I grow older and continue with my career.

What is a skill you would love to learn? I would love to learn how to play the guitar.
