Third graders practicing graphing with M&M’s today.

The 8th grade students are collecting data to observe what happens to temperature changes during a phase change. Later they will be graphing and analyzing the data to develop their understanding of temperature, state, and energy.

We earn letters in 2nd grade for the word, "BALLOON" when we have good class behavior. Today, they finally got to pop a balloon from our bulletin board. Each balloon is filled with a classroom party idea. Today, they popped, "Lights Out Day!" which we will celebrate next week!

The freshmen were studiously working on their test over Geographic terms this morning.

Mr. Helling's class is learning about earthquakes and tornadoes. The students shared their Venn diagrams about the similarities and differences between the two natural disasters.

Preschool has been learning about the letter C this week. We made name caterpillars, read the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar and made crowns to go along with it!

Congrats Mrs. VanZee! She is honored to receive an Unsung Hero Award from @Voya. The money will purchase Science of Reading activities for phonological awareness, word work, decoding strategies, and school-home literacy kits. Excited to have these materials! #VoyaUnsungHeroes

Congratulations to Daniel, Sabrina, Hagan, and Katelynn. They will be representing Mt. Vernon School at this years All-State Chorus and Orchestra performance October 29th in Sioux Falls.

Just an FYI here - Lennox rolls their schedule on game nights. If the pre-varsity matches go fast, the varsity match could start a little earlier than normal. Redfield did the same thing and the varsity match was started by 7:00.

In 7th grade social studies we just finished a unit on the 5 themes of geography. To help students better understand the themes, maps, globes and physical features, each student constructed an interactive notebook.

Good luck to the volleyball team tonight as they travel Lennox. Go Titans!

The Lost and Found Saga of 2022 has begun...... Please take a look at these items and have your child claim if theirs. Yes - that is an unopened bottle of Starbucks Frappuccino that has not been claimed since the first day of school.

The geometry students will begin proofs today. A few of the sophomores decided to take a little break to mentally prepare. Students complete proofs to improve on deductive reasoning and logical thinking. This process teaches students how to use facts and evidence to justify their arguments.

Want to find out interesting facts about our teachers? Check out our teacher spotlights for September, under the News heading on the school website.

The first graders have been working on our doubles and doubles plus one. To help reinforce out math skills, we made a flip book of the facts and played scoot.

This week in Kindergarten, we introduced a new sight word to our reading vocabulary, see! We also get to learn about the letter Ss and how we can uses our senses to help us explore and learn about the world around us. During centers today, we built the words "see" and "we" using playdoh that was donated to our classroom!

The Lady Titans host the MCM Fighting Cougars tonight with a full slate of JH-Varsity games. Follow along with the action here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxv0dXn7KH0 Go Titans!

Did you know that each senior must complete a senior project in order to graduate? This year, the projects include fundraising for the baseball field renovation, building a PC (personal computer), writing a novel, job shadowing, painting murals, organizing care packages for deployed soldiers, diving deep into the family tree, learning to play the guitar, building a cattle show box, restoring a tractor, donating baby supplies to mothers in need, constructing a storage shed, creating art tutorials on YouTube, and retiring American flags.
Not only do the seniors need to complete their projects this school year, but they also must write correlated research papers, meet with their mentors for eight hours, and present their projects to a panel of judges in April.
The seniors work hard! We are proud of them for learning new skills, touching people's lives, and making our community a better place!
